EU states can ban kosher and halal ritual slaughter – CEJI’s reaction

The Court of Justice of the European Union issued a ruling allowing member countries to impose non-lethal stunning before the killing of animals. CEJI is dismayed and deeply troubled by this judgement which infringes on religious freedom.
Just when EU institutions are making commitments towards inclusion in the fight against antisemitism and racism, this ruling is counterproductive to these measures which aim for a Europe where Jewish, Muslim and other minority communities can thrive within the framework of fundamental rights and freedoms.
