Call for Applications: Dutch-speaking Student in Belgium to Help Monitor Online Environments

Background

In the framework of the EU-funded project SafeNet, CEJI – A Jewish Contribution to an Inclusive Europe, is looking for one Dutch-speaking student to monitor hate speech online with a specific focus on Belgium. The student will work with two staff members to develop, customise, and update a list of keywords to inform the monitoring work, as well as to participate in monitoring exercises of hateful content on social media platforms.  

Tasks and responsibilities

The candidate will be tasked with the following:

  1. Participate in a 2-hour online module on understanding and countering hate speech;
  2. Develop and update a lexicon to identify hate speech online;
  3. Monitor online spaces and social platforms;
  4. Keep track of online reports and data from monitoring exercises.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled at an accredited college or university;
  • Fluency in Dutch, professional command of English;
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, and basic database management experience;
  • Good knowledge of social platforms functioning (including but not limited to Facebook, X – formerly known as Twitter –, TikTok, YouTube);
  • Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills;
  • Resourceful, determined, and diligent in the search for information;
  • Detail-oriented in note-taking and keeping good records;
  • Proactive to take initiative and solve problems;
  • Interest and a good understanding of the manifestations of discrimination;
  • Ability to work independently and with an international team.

Practical details

Start Date: September 1st, 2024.

Duration: This role is scheduled for the months of September and October.

Schedule: 15 hours per week, with flexible days to be determined later.

Contract: Standard Student Contract regulated by Belgian legislation.
