Hate speech against migrants and refugees are widespread across Europe both online and offline.  Anti-migrants hate speech exacerbates xenophobic sentiments and may incite to act of intimidation and violence towards this vulnerable group in society.

The arrival of refugees and migrants with diverse backgrounds, culture and religion represents a challenge that, where not properly confronted, can lead to prejudices and misconception which escalate into actual forms of hate.  Although seen as acceptable or harmless, hate speech against migrants and refugees should have no place in our societies. Policy action at all level need to be developed to combat this phenomenon to prevent the escalation into more serious form of violence and to protect victims from its harm.
